The song of the hot summer air.

Driving with the windows down and the radio loud.

Wind waves in the long grass. The endless beat of telephone poles along a gravel road. Dancing of dust devils, driven by the wind and running with it....

belonging more to the sky than to the earth.

At the crossroads where country, folk, rock and jazz meet you'll find the Paul Berner Band and their new CD titled Running Outside. Gliding textures layered by guitarists Ed Verhoeff and Peter Tiehuis float over a stream of rhythm provided by drummer Hans van Oosterhout and band leader and bassist Paul Berner. This is instrumental music that knows no boundaries. Featuring songs by Berner, George Gershwin, and Bruce Springsteen, Running Outside finds roots in the American Heartland, reaches into the open sky of the American West, and warms in the glow of European cities. A simple melody becomes an orchestral event. A multi-layered improvisation becomes a memorable tune. The sound seduces you and embraces you.

(For the real fans: Peter Tiehuis is mixed left, Ed Verhoeff is on the right speaker!)

The band members are:

Paul Berner on double bass --worked during his New York years with many of the giants of the music: Dizzy Gillespie, Milt Jackson, Stan Getz, Mel Lewis and the Jazz Orchestra, Peter Erskine, Les Paul, Joe Lovano and many others. In addition, he was a member of the Lionel Hampton Orchestra for two years, and subsequently spent two years with the Monty Alexander Trio. Since his arrival in Holland in 1990 he has worked with many well-known musicians, such as Eric Vloeimans, Toon Roos, Jesse van Ruller, Frits Landesbergen and Mike del Ferro. He has made many CDs in America and in Europe, for example with Red Rodney, the Amsterdam Jazz Quintet, the Nederlands Blazers Ensemble, Greetje Kauffeld and Michael Moore to name just a few.

Peter Tiehuis on guitar --is one of Europe's leading guitar players. He is well-known internationally, working with groups such as the Skymasters, Peter Herbolzheimer's Rhythm Combination and Brass, Batida, Till Brönner's 'Ballad Joint', the Wolfgang Haffner Project, the Chris Hinze Combination, and the Metropole Orchestra (which he's been a regular member of since 1996). His versatility has enabled him to play almost any kind of music and has led to many recording dates, in Belgium, Germany and England as well as Holland. Over the years he has worked with such greats as Toots Thielemans, George Duke, Jasper van 't Hof, Charlie Mariano, Tania Maria, Nina Simone, Al Jarreau, Tina Turner, Chaka Khan, Elvis Costello, Mike Stern, the Yellow Jackets, the Brecker Brothers, Terry Bozzio, Steve Vai, Herbie Hancock. He was also a member of country singer Ilse deLange's band for four years.

Ed Verhoeff on guitar -- has been a member of jazz bassist Hein van de Geyn's group Baseline since 1997 (when he replaced John Abercrombie). In the period 1998-2000 he worked with pop singer Mathilde Santing. At the moment he can often be heard with his own band, Ed Verhoeff's EDition, and with the band of Latin singer Izaline Calister. Ed can be heard on CDs by Ramses Shaffy, Ilsa Huizinga, Hein van der Geyn's Baseline, Mathilde Santing and Madeline Bell.

Hans van Oosterhout on drums --is one of the most sought-after drummers on the Continent. Hans has worked with many well-known artists, such as Toots Thielemans, Lee Konitz, John Scofield, Chet Baker, Bob Mintzer and Miroslav Vitous. He is member of the Jack van Poll Trio, Rob van Bavel Trio, and Philip Catherine Trio, in addition to being one if the original members of Hein van der Geyn's Baseline. Nowadays one seldom finds him at home; as the regular drummer for Dee Dee Bridgewater he is frequently on tour.
